A complete treatment of the general motion of rotation and translation of a solar-sail spacecraft is proposed for the non-flat sail of complex shape. The planar heliocentric roto-translatory motion is considered, orbit-rotational coupling in the problem of altitude and orbital sail motion is investigated for the two-folding sail formed by two unequal reflective rectangular plates oriented at a right angle. The problem of orbit-rotational coupling is essentially a planar one: both sail plates are orthogonal to the orbital plane. The possibility of the non-controlled interplanetary transfer with such two-folding sail at its passive radiational orientation is established analytically from point of view of orbit-rotational coupling. Optimal geometric proportions of this sail are found at minimum-time interplanetary transfers. 相似文献

In an attempt to identify the molecular shocks associated with the entrainment of ambient gas by collimated stellar winds from young stars, we have imaged a number of known molecular outflows in H2 v=1-0 S(1) and wide-band K. In each flow, the observed H2 features are closely associated with peaks in the CO outflow maps. We therefore suggest that the H2 results from shocks associated with the acceleration or entrainment of ambient, molecular gas. This molecular material may be accelerated either in a bow shock at the head of the flow, or along the length of the flow through a turbulent mixing layer. 相似文献

The extended Knox-Thompson reduction scheme currently in use at Kitt Peak National Observatory and Steward Observatory for the reduction of infrared speckle interferometry is described in detail. Applications of this algorithm and the less computationally intensive shift-and-add analysis to both simulated and real binary star data is presented demonstrating that the latter may be successfully used for image reconstruction by using a separately measured point source. The performance of both techniques is shown to improve by application of an iterative deconvolution algorithm to apply a priori image constraints without degradation of photometric information.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy Inc. We carried out new observations of the binary asteroid 22 Kalliope (S2/2001) with the Shane 3-m telescope of the Lick observatory in October and November 2001. With a FWHM (full width at half maximum) of 0″.2, Kalliope (apparent size of about 0″.15) was not resolved but it was possible to separate the secondary from its primary whose apparent separation was of the order of 0″.7 with a magnitude difference of 3.22±0.20. As each set of observations spanned a few days of time, they are well distributed along the secondary's orbit, enabling us to accurately estimate its orbit.The satellite orbits 22 Kalliope in a prograde manner with respect to Kalliope's rotational spin (which is in a retrograde sense relative to its orbit around the Sun), on a highly inclined (i=19.8±2.0 with respect to the equator of 22 Kalliope) and moderately eccentric orbit (e=0.07±0.02) with an orbital period of 3.58±0.08 days. The semi-major axis is 1020±40 km. Using Kalliope's diameter as determined from IRAS data, the asteroid's bulk density is about 2.03±0.16 g cm−3, suggestive of a highly porous body with a porosity of 70% considering that the grain density of its meteoritic analog is of ∼7.4 g cm−3. This suggests a rubble pile, rather than solid, body. The measured nodal precession rate of the secondary's orbit seems to be much higher than expected from Kalliope's oblateness, assuming a homogeneous body (constant density). This suggests that Kalliope may be 60% more elongated or 35% larger than presently believed or/and that its internal structure is highly inhomogeneous with a denser outer shell. 相似文献

Comet 81P/Wild 2 was observed in the thermal infrared over 6 months during its 1997 perihelion passage. The comet was most active in late February, about 3 months preperihelion; dust production declined by a factor of 3 between February and August. For the GIOTTO Halley dust size distribution, maximum dust production rate was ∼2 × 106 g/s. The comet displayed a 10-μm silicate feature about 25% above the continuum, similar to several other Jupiter-family comets, but much lower than that seen in a number of Oort cloud comets.NASA’s STARDUST sample return mission will encounter P/Wild 2 98 days postperihelion in January 2004. Based on our observations at a similar point in the orbit and the Halley size distribution, we predict that the mass fluence on the spacecraft for a 150 km miss distance will be about 8 × 10−6 g/cm2 for particles up to 1 cm in radius. The solar wind is a magnetized flowing plasma that intersects the Earth's magnetosphere at a velocity much greater than that of the compressional fast mode wave that is required to deflect that flow. A bow shock forms that alters the properties of the plasma and slows the flow, enabling continued evolution of the properties of the flow on route to its intersection with the magnetopause. Thus the plasma conditions at the magnetopause can be quite unlike those in the solar wind. The boundary between this “magnetosheath” plasma and the magnetospheric plasma is many gyroradii thick and is surrounded by several boundary layers. A very important process occurring at the magnetopause is reconnection whereby there is a topological change in magnetic flux lines so that field lines can connect the solar wind plasma to the terrestrial plasma, enabling the two to mix. This connection has important consequences for momentum transfer from the solar wind to the magnetosphere. The initiation of reconnection appears to be at locations where the magnetic fields on either side of the magnetopause are antiparallel. This condition is equivalent to there being no guide field in the reconnection region, so at the reconnection point there is truly a magnetic neutral or null point. Lastly reconnection can be spatially and temporally varying, causing the region of the magnetopause to be quite dynamic. 相似文献

We have constructed line-by-line fluorescence models for the ro-vibrational bands of the B-X system of sulfur dimers (S2). For the first time the detailed rotational lines of the bands are clearly resolved in the high-resolution echelle spectra of Comet Hyakutake (C/1996 B2), which were obtained at the Kitt Peak 4-m telescope on 26.4 March 1996 (UT). In order to construct satisfactory band models of the B-X system, we first compared the models to laboratory spectra available in literature, and then compared the models including Swings effects to the high-resolution spectra of Hyakutake. From the model fits, we derived a rotational temperature of 70±10 K, which should represent a temperature of a coma region close to the nucleus, where most of the S2 emissions originate. We present previously proposed scenarios for the origin of S2 in cometary comae, and compare them with our spectral analysis. 相似文献

This paper proposes two subgrade reaction models for the analysis of steel sheet pile walls based on the transfer matrix method. In the first model a plastic hinge is generated when the maximum moment in the retaining structure is exceeded. The second model deals with a beam with an asymmetrical cross‐section that can bend in two directions. In the first part of this paper the transfer matrix method is explained on the basis of a simple example. Further the development of two computer models is described: Plaswall and Skewwall. The second part of this paper deals with an application of both models. In the application of Plaswall the effect of four current earth pressure theories to the subgrade reaction method is compared to a finite element calculation. It is shown that the earth pressure theory is of major importance on the calculation result of a sheet pile wall both with and without a plastic hinge. In the application of Skewwall the effectiveness of structural measures to reduce oblique bending is investigated. The results are compared to a 3D finite element calculation.
